Hello mamas! It’s rough going being a toe. You’re often ignored, covered up by socks and shoes and not given prime-time exposure. If your larger person, so to speak, wants to treat herself, you might receive a massage or get your nails trimmed, filed or even painted … but that’s a once in a while type of event. How unfair that faces and hands get washed and creamed up daily and you, poor toe, get so much less love and attention. Meanwhile, how essential you are. No person could take a single step without their toes, let’s not forget about that. You are key to balance, walking, jumping, running and dancing.
Well, my friend, do not despair: the extended hand to big toe pose puts you front and center. No more feeling ignored, overlooked, hidden. You’re in the driver’s seat now because your person needs to grab you while straightening her standing leg, and (partnering with you) stretch her leg out in front, straightening it. Once the leg is straight, she can tilt you all the way to side if she has enough balance to manage that maneuver.
Head to Toe Pose
Part of the yoga sequence for Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana, the head to toe pose isn’t something you can achieve from day 1. Rather, it requires practice over a long period of time. When I first started to try this pose, I managed to hold my knee front and then churn it to the side. Gradually, I made my way up my leg and eventually, I managed to hold my big toe, with my leg bent. Over time, I could straighten my leg and hold it forward… the last step was tilting it to the side. As you can see from these photos, I do not look like a pro here and there’s room for improvement. But I am getting a lot out of the pose nonetheless, and inspired by the challenge.
When in a forward pose like this, I try to imagine a pole sticking right through the center of me, holding me up. That helps me from tipping over. I also try to find a focal point in front of me.
As I’ve often observed, yoga is a metaphor for life. Often, we find ourselves out of balance, tired, thirsty or hungry, annoyed, overwhelmed or stressed. Breathing deeply and concentrating on the things that give you balance can help you gain your center. That could be a special person, an activity like walking, or even a song. Anything that brings you a sense of peace, calm and belonging to the moment.
Let’s not forget about my fabulous outfit. Camo has gone so cool with Onzie‘s latest collection.
I am loving my Midnight Camo outfit with white, grey, black and sapphire blue. I get so many compliments on these pants and enjoy them all day long with long sweaters, t-shirts or tanks. Onzie has taken yoga wear to a whole new level with their chic, classic yet creative designs.
Tell me how you treat your toes and enter this month’s Onzie giveaway. I’m crossing my fingers for one of you lucky mamas to win.
