Creating a Space to Take Care of Your New Baby

Hello parents! I’m excited to be debuting a new baby series today on the site. I’m back in my nursery talking ’bout some of the little things that helped me to care for my own five babies and made life just a bit less overwhelming!
Taking your baby home from the hospital is such a chaotic, overwhelming time for every new mother! What I found that really helped was to have a space in my house, a room (or even a part of a room), which is solely dedicated to taking care of your little one. In this room, you won’t be distracted by other things going on in the house and can really focus all of your attention on nurturing your newborn.
Did you have your own special place in which you cared for your newborn? Weigh in below!
Nursing Station
Every good nursery starts with a nursing chair. Although it is a bulky, expensive piece of furniture, I would definitely recommend a nursing chair because it will put you in the perfect positioning for breastfeeding. It provides your arms and back with the support they need and will prevent back pain, a great piece of news for new mom. If not nursing, a nursing chair provides a great place to burp to and hold your baby — down the line, it’s also a super place to read to your growing baby when you are starting to read more picture books together.
A pump station is very useful as well. I have a little table next to my nursing chair where I keep my breast pump, a plastic bowl of plastic milk bottles, my hospital burp cloth, and other nursing essentials. A perfect baby feeding station! Watch for more info, and best of luck creating a nursery that works for you!

Hi Melissa! I actually nursed everywhere, but I’d say mostly on my bed because when my kids were small they slept in our room in bassinets. But what I loved was this nursing pillow I had with a little pocket for all those knick knacks you need but always forget, like your phone, or their nail clippers, or the vitamin D and all that. My bedside table also served as a station of sorts, with water, or a book.
