Hi everyone and welcome to Month 33 with your baby and Month 33 with my toddler Bracey.
How Old is a 33-Month-Old Toddler?
Your toddler is now 2 years and 9 months old. In three months, your toddler will be 3. Wow.
Average Weight and Height of a 33-Month-Old Toddler
Average Weight of 33-Month-Old?
The average weight for a 33-month-old toddler is 30.8 pounds for boys
(14 kilos) and 29.7 pounds (13.5 kilos) for girls.
How Tall is the Average 33-Month-Old?
The average height for a 33-month-old boy is 36.8 inches (93.5 cm) and for a girl is 36.4 inches (92.4 cm).
33-Month-Old Toddler Developmental Milestones
33-Month-Old Toddler Speech Milestones
What’s typical for a 33-month-old when it comes to speech and language? By this age, most toddlers can:
- Say over 100 words. Starting at the age of 2.5, many toddlers display a noticeable increase in vocabulary and language skills.
- Utter 3- to 4-word phrases, including with an action word like “Sad cow fell.”
- Use the past tense when making reference to their own experience, saying things like “Bracey swam.”
- Articulate parts of a story you read to them. For example, you’re reading Harry the Dirty Dog, and your toddler says “Harry now clean!”
- Incorporate verbs into sentences.
How Can I Teach my 2-Year-Old Toddler to Speak?
By this point, you can focus on pronouns. Experts advise that part of the reason toddlers struggle so much to say “I,” and ‘you,” is that we don’t use these words with our toddlers. We say “Mommy would like you to go to bed,” instead of “I would like you to go to bed.” At this stage, experts advise that it’s a good idea to start talking in a normal way with your toddler, and using pronouns. I would do this in two ways:
- Show your toddler how to speak. When your toddler says “Bracey wants chocolate” put the words into their mouth, and add some politeness too. So perhaps you say something like: “Bracey, did you mean to say: ‘I would like some chocolate, please, Mommy.’”
- Model your own speech. Answer the way you would an adult, say “Bracey, I would prefer you do not eat chocolate now because it’s almost dinner time, and I want you to save your appetite for dinner.” Rather than just saying “no chocolate.”
How to Teach your Toddler Polite, Positive Communication Skills
Try to avoid repeating the word no with your Toddler. I sometimes think toddlers hear our voices the way Charlie Brown characters in Peanuts perceive adults who exclaim “blah, blah, blah, blah”. Master your words. Rather than saying “no” to your toddler all the time, explain something. So in the case above, say, “I would rather you have chocolate after dinner.” Or “how about we save chocolate for dessert.” Or better even, “I think if you have that chocolate now, you won’t have such a good appetite for dinner so let’s save it for later, ok?” Offer up the reasons behind your decisions and this will get your toddler thinking even more about why we do what we do and how we go about structuring our days.
Physical Development Milestones for a 33-Month-Old Toddler
You should continue to see progression in your toddler’s physical dexterity. Keep getting outside, keep moving while inside. Try to get to the park once or twice a day. The sunlight and fresh air will be great for both you and your toddler. Chatting with other parents in the playground is a great way to create a community and share experiences and tips.
Physical Activities for a 33-Month-Old Toddler
Encourage your toddler to be active outside on the swings, play gym, seesaw, slide, and by biking and doing short runs. While inside, encourage your toddler to stay active by helping them go up and down stairs, and on and off the sofa, and by doing small activities and games that involve balls or physical movement. Try to avoid television, the iPhone, the iPad, and to opt for having your toddler interact directly with the outside world. Real life is your toddler’s best playmate.

Intellectual Activities for a 33-Month-Old-Toddler
Fine Motor Activities for a 33-Month-Old
Stick with the same fine motor activities you pulled out in prior months: finger painting, drawing, puzzles, leafing through books, block building, and other manipulatives and toys that emphasize sorting, counting, spatial recognition, and dexterity.
Why Train Sets Make Great Fine-Motor Skills
Train sets are super because your toddler can build his own imaginative world while practicing their fine motor and gross motor skills. Our cherished Thomas the Train came out of storage recently. Bracey has been enjoying putting the rails together and sending his trains off on different adventures. I often see him pushing trains around and talking to himself. It’s good to give your toddler the time and space to play alone. This encourages independence.

How much sleep does my 2.5-Year-Old Need?
Your toddler will need about 12.5-14 hours of sleep over a 24 hour period. That means 11-12 hours at night and a 1.5-3 hours nap. Bracey sleeps 13-15 hours a day, 11-12 hours at night with a nap of 2-3 hours.
Scheduled for 33-Month-Old Toddler with 1 Afternoon Nap
- 7am feed* & breakfast
- 10am snack
- 12pm feed & lunch (1-3pm sleep)
- 3pm feed & snack
- 6pm dinner
- 7:32 pm final milk feeding
- 8pm bedtime
*Start the schedule when your toddler wakes up. If you are no longer breastfeeding, give milk or its alternative after the meal.
Bracey update
During his 33th month, Bracey continued to enjoy art activities at home and playing outdoors and inside. Opening and closing doors at home and turning the lights on and off continued to be one of his favorite pastimes. We’re still in the thick of potty training. We’ve had daily success with number 1 but number 2 is happening in the diapers. Thanks for watching and see you back soon for Month 34.
