Hi everyone and welcome to Month 22 with your baby and Month 22 with my toddler Bracey.
How Old is a 22-Month-Old Toddler?
A 22-Month-Old Toddler is one year and 10 months old. In two months, your child will be 24 months old or 2 years old. Congrats!
Will your Toddler visit the Doctor at 22 Months?
Your baby will not be visiting the doctor at 22 months unless you are late for the 22 month visit or there is something specific to check on. Since Bracey was a premie, we had our usual checkup.
22 Month-Old Developmental Milestones
How Much Should my 22-Month-Old Talk?
How many words should a 22-month-old say? Many 22-month-olds are saying a variety of words by this point. Some experts say around 20 and others say up to 50 or beyond. I would say Bracey has about 15 basic words (and that includes animal sounds). I do see him combining sounds and words into what seem to be short phrases, although I can’t tell yet what he is trying to say.
One big change I see is Bracey responding to two-step commands, such as if I say “can you please bring me my shoes” or “please throw me the ball.” Bracey seems to understand many of these commands and loves bringing me things I ask him for.
How Can I Encourage my 22-Month-Old to Talk?
In addition to reading, singing, narrating what you do, narrating what your child is doing, and engaging in a panoply of language-rich activities, continue to help your child articulate their own activities and responses and try to mention what category of food, activity or object they are interacting with. You’ll sound a bit artificial but keep telling them what they are doing. “Hi there, Bracey, are you enjoying riding on that bike or would you like to try another activity?,” or “would you like to have a piece of fruit such as a slice of apple, pear or orange?” Or “what type of vegetable would you like, Bracey?” Compare how many words you can fit in when you speak like this to just handing your child an orange slice or pointing them towards a bike. If your 22-month-old is not talking, or even not talking but appears to understand everything, talk with your doctor since early intervention when it comes to speech and language delay is key.
How Should my 22-Month-Old be Moving?
What should my 22-month-old be doing? Most 22-month-olds are walking backwards and forwards, running, getting up and down the stairs by walking, throwing a ball underhand (Bracey can throw overhand), throwing things left and right (including diapers into the crib which is not so convenient), and pedaling a tricycle with training wheels.)
Physical Activities for a 20-Month-Old Toddler
Practice running forwards and backwards, throwing balls, hopping, balancing, and keep dancing and playing outside. Have fun on the swings, play gym, slide and climbing onto anything safe. You’ll see your toddler throwing things left and right. Encourage it. As long he’s not hurting anyone, throwing is great for gross and fine motor skills.

Tips for Finger painting with a Toddler.
Here are some tips for playing with fingerpaint.
- Strap them in. That way they can’t run off with their hands covered with paint.
- Tape the paper to the table.
- Dress child in old clothes, I use a oneside.
- Let them choose the color.
- Have extra paper on hand.
- Have a wet washcloth handy.
- Have a big old bath towel ready and take the child directly to the bath.
- Concentrate on simple forms and shapes. Straight line, curvy line, circle, square, rectangle, triangle; then, sun, circle, smiley face, sad face, fish, house, truck, star.
What Should my 22-Month-Old be Eating?
Solid Foods and Sleep Schedule for a 22-Month-Old
We’re on the same schedule. How much sleep does a 22-month-old need? Your toddler will need about 12.5-14 hours of sleep over a 24 hour period. Hopefully that means 11 hours at night and a 1.5-3 hours nap. Bracey sleeps 14-15 hours a day, 12 hours at night and takes a 3 hour nap so I am lucky. Start this schedule when your child wakes up and use it as a loose framework to ensure your child has regular naps and healthy meals to keep energy levels consistent.
- 7am feed* & breakfast
- 10am snack
- 12pm feed & lunch (1-3pm sleep)
- 3pm feed & snack
- 6pm dinner
- 7:30 pm final milk feeding
- 8pm bedtime
*If no longer breastfeeding, give milk or its alternative after the meal.
Growth and Development of 22-Month-Old-Baby
Average 22-Month-Old Height and Weight?
How much should a 22-month-old measure and weigh? The average 22-month-old baby boy weighs 25.9 pounds (11.8 kilos) and the average baby girl weighs 25 pounds 4 ounces (11.5 kilos). The average height for a 22-month-old is 33.4 inches for girls (85 cm) and 33.9 inches for boys (86 cm). At his 22 month checkup, Bracey weighed approximately 11.3 kilos (24 pounds 9 ounces), and measured 82.5 centimeters (32.5 inches). Bracey had not gained any weight nor grown from the last month but my doctor told me that was totally normal.
Should my Toddler Visit the Doctor at 22 Months
Unless you have something specific you want your doctor to check, your child will not have a check up at 22 months. Bracey’s doctor wants to see him every month until the age of two since he was born prematurely, so he went to the doctor to get all the usual things checked out. Fortunately, Bracey did not cry throughout the entire appointment (as he had in prior appointments). We were pleased to learn that everything is on track.
Bracey update
Bracey enjoyed the month of July, the highpoint being playing around the house, playing outside and playing in the park. Dropping his sisters off at camp was a special treat. The highpoint of the month was visiting the Loire Valley and playing with his sisters in the beautiful French countryside. Thanks so much for watching and see you next month for Month 23.
