Schedule: Eating and Sleeping for Babies at 6 Months to 9 Months Old

Today I’ll be talking to you about one of my absolute FAVORITE topics ever—eating and sleeping schedules for babies! I think that having a set schedule is the key to having a well-rested and well-fed baby. Consistency is really important for babies at this age, and hopefully once they get used to it, mom and dad can catch a little break, too.
What should a day for my 6-9 month old look like?
At this stage, your baby has likely been sampling solid foods and sleeping longer at nights (which we all LOVE, right?!). It’s a really nice stage, and sleep for babies at this age comes in the form of about 2-3 naps per day with plenty of feedings (milk and solids!) in between the naps.
As far as naps are concerned, this is a general idea of what your baby’s schedule should look like. I’m following my experience here over the course of my five babies. (For some different perspectives on babies and sleep at this age, check out this helpful article from our friends at FamilyEducation.com.)
- 9:30-11:30 a.m. morning nap.
- 1:30-3:30 afternoon nap
- 45 minute-1 hour “Cat Nap” from 5:30-6:30 p.m. or from 6-7 p.m.
This is just a guideline, and of course, it varies tremendously from baby to baby. Some babies take shorter morning or afternoon naps, some take shorter cat naps, and some babies have even started to transition from 3 to 2 naps, which I go into a bit more in this video here.
So now that we’ve covered sleeping, when is my baby supposed to take milk between all of those naps? At this age, it’s best to be giving your baby milk 4-5 times per day, approximately every 4 hours. And just a quick side note: this schedule applies whether you’re breastfeeding or giving your baby formula!
- 7 a.m. after they wake up
- 11:30 a.m. after their morning nap
- 3:30 p.m. after their afternoon nap
- 7:30 p.m. after dinner and before bedtime
- 11 pm “top off feed,” or one nighttime feeding. This is interchangeable—you can swamp the 11 p.m. top off feed for a late feeding at 2 or 3 a.m., it just depends on your preference.
So that’s it for milk feedings, but what about solids? My doctor advised me to get my baby used to all of the different tastes and textures at this age, but primarily the nutrition is coming from the milk. Ever heard of the expression, “food before one is just for fun?” Well, that definitely applies here! It’s a good idea to get into a routine of introducing solids to your baby, and I have another video on that if you’re having trouble with this transition!
When should you add solids into your baby’s day and how will this work?
- 7:30 a.m after the milk feed. I would try to do solids meals after milk feedings since most of their nutrition comes from the milk feedings. If they’re too full from milk, wait 20 minutes and try again!
- 12 p.m. after milk feed
- 7 p.m. before last milk feed
This is quite a bit of overwhelming information to take in, so I put together an entire sample schedule for your 6-9 month old with all of this combined. Again, this is all personal preference, but it has saved me plenty of sleepless nights with my children!

hi there I am a mom to a 17 year old and a 19 month old we are currently displaced at the moment and have been living in hotels and staying at peoples house that we know we aren’t around any family as they are 3 states away so my question is that before we moved my 19 month old was sort of on a schedule and now 3 months later he has practically no schedule at all and I am trying to get hi back on one we co sleep we have since day one because I breast fed him till 6 months but now he wont go to sleep unless I am there this makes it kind of hard especially when he gets up in the middle of the night to get in our bed from his sisters which disrupts my sleep no one else’s of course do you have any suggestions to make it easier also he gets mad throws a fit when told no or not let to do what he wants

Hi there Jennifer, sounds like you guys are in a transition period so honestly, I would check with my doctor and do what is easiest for you at this time until you get more stability. It might be hard to get him on a schedule if you are staying in motels and not with family. In terms of his fits, in my view 6 months is way too early for any sort of discipline, but I would just calmly stick to my guns and not give in to his every demand… just make sure you are feeding him enough and try to give him as many good naps as you can. hang in there, xo M

Hi, this is exactly the schedule I have my baby on. But, I have run into a problem. She is much happier (and my supply does better) if I feed her more often than 4 hours. How would you recommend fitting in 5 feedings before bedtime with only 3 naps? I like feeding her right when she wakes up, so I’m not sure where to fit in the extra feeding!
Cindy
Instead of feeding her the extra feeding have you considered pumping and storing that milk?

My LO feeding schedule is: up 7:30am
7:30am formula 7-8oz
12pm puree (half a small jar) then 6-7oz milk
4:30pm liga (pureed with some formula)
9pm 7-8oz of formula, burped, changed then put to bed,she sleeps until 7/7:30 the next day! she seems pretty happy with the rountine and sleeps all night. She naps well (2-3 times a day)! She won’t eat her solid unless we give them to her before her bottle!. Does this routine sound ok? Should i be giving her breakfast puree to? And putting her to bed a bit earlier? Thanks!.

Wow! I don’t know how old your baby is but sounds like things are going very well! I think you could start to give her a solid after breakfast or, if she is not too fussy, you could try giving her the solid beforehand (my babies would not take it at that time). Then, over time she will start to take less milk and more solids… great job!

* after her liga at 4:30 she drinks 6-7oz of formula

My baby is 6months. She was on a good schedule and sleeping most of the night (minus 1-2 consistent waking for bottles). Now that I’ve began introducing foods (the past couple weeks) she is up and down ALL night long. She fights naps during the day, We are lucky if we get an hour nap in around 9am and a 20minute nap in the evening. I don’t know what to do anymore… I’m loosing my mind. Please help, any advice is appreciated.

My son is 27 weeks and is on the schedule below. I want to shift his schedule so he’s up for the day at 7am rather than 6:00. Will shifting his naps around upset him too much as this stage? Any suggestions?
6:00-6:30 up and milk
7:30 solids
8:00-8:30 nap
10:00 up and milk
12:00 solids
12:30 nap
1:30 up and milk
3:30-4:00 30 minute catnap
6:00 solids then milk
6:30-45 bed (asleep

Hi Melissa,
My lo turned 6 months a few days ago… But since her birth, she had been sleeping at 2 am.. With much difficulty I’ve been able to pull her night time to between 10.30 and 11.30.. She wakes up through the night… Takes her feed and falls back to sleep… While feeding… Long story short… She’s a light sleeper and teething as well… How do I go about changing her schedule to what you’ve suggested??? Would love a comeback on this ASAP please… Thanks a ton..

P.s he at her works late… Comes back around 9 at night… And goes to work late as well… So our family schedule is a little lopsided… But I want to set hers right…

At the end it states you have a combined schedule of everything. Where is that I can’t find it. Thanks
Petra
I was wondering why the late bedtime of 8?

I have a 6 month old and her schedule is pretty consistent. She wakes up at 7 am gets 6oz bottle than breakfast oatmeal or rice cereal plus a fruit at 8:00 naps at 10:30am-12:00 pm gets a 6oz bottle, stays up until about 4pm which she gets another 6 oz bottle, wakes at 6:00pm dinner is served of oatmeal or rice cereal with a vegetable followed by a bottle of, you guessed it, 6 oz and goes down for bed around 8:15 with a feeding of usually 4-5 oz because that’s all she will take. And than sleeps through the night with an occasional wake up at 4 but I can usually get her to fall back asleep after I change her. Love our schedule, or should I say hers? Haha

If baby wakes up from that 3rd cat nap at 7 pm, what time are you putting baby to bed? assuming not ready to sleep again at that 8 pm bedtime?

Hi Melissa, I noticed that your last feeding of the day had solids first then milk. What is the reason for this particular sequence compared to the rest of the feedings? Also, is it okay to drop all night feeds at this stage? Will our supply/breasts be okay? I seem to be prone to blockages…
