Hi there mamas and papas. One of the trickiest things we parents confront is a child that doesn’t behave well in public. You set out for your nice family day, packing up the kids and trying to remember all their necessities, and then BOOM. Your kid flings himself into a full-on toddler tantrum, yelling and crying, red in the face, perhaps even throwing things.People are staring at you, sometimes even muttering things under their breath like “kids these days,” or “not how I raised mine!” Let’s face it, it’s embarrassing or, dare I say, humiliating. In today’s video, I reflect on my own experiences with this and offer some tips regarding disciplining a toddler, or an older child, in public.Toddler discipline poses a challenge because you are not within the walls of your own home where you can talk to you child in peace without the worry of others’ scrutiny and even imposes consequences, which are really punishments. So to me, step number one to dealing with this situation for us parents is taking the pressure off by telling yourself, “I’m going to do what works.” If you are able to communicate with your child and you choose to discipline him, by all means do so. If you need to cut some corners, well that’s ok too. Kids are kids and they will repeat whatever behavior you find objectionable, I promise.
