Crescent Lunge — or Anjaneyasana — is a dynamic standing yoga pose that uses all the muscles in your body. Its name comes from the Sanskrit words “anjaneya” (meaning “praise” or “salutation”) and “asana” (meaning “pose”). It is sometimes referred to as a Salutation Pose, and is performed during the Sun Salutation series.
Benefits of Crescent Lunge
Crescent Lunge stretches the inner and outer thighs and groin, while also opening the chest and and shoulders. It strengthens and tones the thighs, hips, and butt. Crescent Lunge also helps improve posture by strengthening the arms and upper and lower back.
This is a great pose to practice in your backyard. Here I am in my mama’s backyard at the end of summer, sad to be seeing the summer months end, but psyched to be sporting a new shiny white outfit from our lovely sponsor Onzie Yogawear.Like many yoga poses, Crescent Lunge pose looks easier than it is. Keeping your back knee straight as you bend down your front leg into a lunge is tricky! Likewise, keeping your arms straight and back near your ears requires flexibility and strength, particularly of the upper back.Looking at these pictures, I’m embarrassed, thinking to myself “Get that leg down girl, go lower!” But yoga isn’t about perfection, or being the best. Rather, it’s about being your best self. On this particular day, on top of the green grass and under the bright sun, this was in fact my best self and that is good enough.
Find a way to get outside soon and walk, stretch or bike-ride. Breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the trees and grass. This will refresh and reinvigorate you — I promise.
