Hiya, mamas! When I think of plaid, I think preppy, conservative, even stiff. Having grown up in New England, plaid has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. One of my first skirts was a Tartan kilt complete with large silver pin. You get the picture!

I’m lucky to have a super fashionable friend who shares her finds! Tamela Greathouse Greene – a long-time bestie and founder of a design company ATStudios – often throws me and our pal, Julia, such great fashion coups! When we went for our annual Christmas lunch last December, Tamela modeled the pants you see here. When they went on sale, I grabbed them. Julia then bought the Zara dress I wore to the same lunch. Can you tell we are the closest of friends?

Ok so back to the plaid. You have to get serious when it comes to how to wear plaid pants! Meaning, plaid pants stand on their own. Keep the rest super simple and let the plaid dominate. Throw in a bright color or another pattern and you risk looking clown-like. Not our goal, mamas!

What to Wear Plaid Pants With

So now you’re asking what to wear plaid pants with? Consider a simple white blouse, a black sweater, crew or turtleneck. Keep it clean and elegant. I would avoid ruffles or buttoned cardigans. Balance the preppy out.
