Melissa here back with another fashion post in our series with Onzie yoga wear.  In today’s post, I’m demonstrating the Warrior One pose from Vinyasa or flow yoga.  Vinyasa has many meanings, but one I like is that of a sequential movement that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow.

Story of Warrior Poses

The term Warrior always struck me as odd since yoga is such a peaceful endeavor, so I did some research.  In fact, the Warrior poses (there are three of them) derive from a revered yoga text the Bhagavad-Gita, which consists of a dialog between two famous and feared warriors, Krishna and Arjuna, set on a battlefield between two great armies ready for a fight.  Honored in this pose is the idea of a spiritual warrior battling against the universal enemy, self-ignorance or “avid”, the ultimate source of all of our suffering.

Warrior 1 Pose

Although the Warrior 1 pose’s meaning goes way beyond it’s physical benefits, those are multiple and deep. The Warrior One pose promotes flexibility in the hips and shoulders with enhanced stability, tones the abs, strengthens the upper and lower back, strengthens the ankles, and tones your behind! Pretty easy to do on your own, no matter how advanced in yoga you are, you can try out the Warrior 1 pose in your bedroom, without a mat.When I first started doing vinyasa yoga, I was tighter in the hips and had trouble getting my feet far apart for the Warrior One pose.  I’ve still got a ways to go but I now am better able to maintain my hips in the foward-facing position and to stretch my legs out wider.
