Melissa here with concerning information from the CPSC this week regarding the latest baby product recall. If you’re a mom or dad of a young infant, please read on to find out why IKEA crib mattresses are being recalled!
IKEA Recalls Crib Mattress
When putting your child to sleep in their crib, my biggest concern was definitely not the actual mattress my child was sleeping on. Rather, I was more worried about my baby becoming fussy and wailing in the middle of the night, or worse, a rare but tragic case of SIDS.
According to a recent report by the CPSC, IKEA has recently recalled a line of VYSSA SPELEVINK crib mattresses, which sold for around $100 at stores nationwide and online from 2000 to 2014. The mattresses measure 52” by 27 ½” and are white with blue piping around the edge. Furthermore, you can distinguish the mattresses using the identification label attached to the mattress cover. This label includes the manufacture data and the VYSSA SPELEVINK model name.
So why have more than 38,000 of these crib mattresses been recalled in the past week? This is actually not the first time the mattresses have been recalled. They were previously pulled from the market in January and May of this year for entrapment hazards. However, this time, the mattresses are failing to meet federal open flame standards, posing a dangerous fire hazard. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported thus far.
If you are a parent using this brand of crib mattresses, the report strongly urges you to immediately stop using the mattresses and to return them to any IKEA store for a full refund.
