Hello, hello everyone!
Super interesting topic in today’s blog. Most moms would argue that breastfed babies and pacifiers don’t go well together, but a study done in a children’s hospital in Oregon has shown that pacifiers may actually help with breastfeeding instead of hindering it. According to the study, researchers observed 2,249 babies for a one-year period and found that the rate of exclusive breastfeeding dropped from 80 percent to 70 percent when pacifiers were taken away.

Introducing Pacifiers to a Newborn
I found this story to be fascinating because it reminded me of the birth of my son when I learned about the benefits of a pacifier firsthand. When my third child was born prematurely at about 36 weeks, he was whisked off to the NICU due to breathing difficulties before I even got a chance to really meet him. It was horrible. He was not strong enough to nurse for a few days, so the nurses gave him bottles while he stayed in the NICU. When I was finally able to nurse, I could only nurse during the day and the NICU staff continued to give my son bottles and pacifiers during the night. To my surprise, this didn’t affect breastfeeding for me at all.
Watch this vlog to hear more about my experience and why I think this happened, as well as what I learned. I never would have expected this, but my NICU experience made me a more relaxed mom when it came to breastfeeding. Watch my video to find out why.
