I’m breaking away from my vacation for a bit because there’s an important recall that I wanted to make sure you all knew about! The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and four major retailers have issued a voluntary recall of Nap Nanny infant recliners following a number of infant deaths.
The CPSC warns that the Nap Nanny recliners “contain defects in the design, warnings and instructions which pose a substantial risk of injury and death to infants” and said that Amazon.com, Diapers.com, Buy Buy Baby and Toys R Us/Babies R Us have agreed to recall the product because the manufacturer (Baby Matters LLC) was “unable or unwilling to.” The CPSC says it has received nearly 100 reports of children almost falling out of the product. Yikes!
You’ve probably seen this product: it’s a portable baby seat designed for an infant to sleep, rest or play. I personally never used one, but it’s popular with parents in part because the bucket seat shape puts baby at a similar angle as an infant car seat. Some people say this helps their babies sleep, especially if they suffer from reflux.
This recall is a really good reminder that it’s crucial to follow any safety instructions and warnings on baby products, particularly regarding your baby and sleep. For all the guidelines you need on safe infant sleep, here’s a link to the American Academy of Pediatrics website. It’s worth noting that their recommendations include always placing your baby to sleep on his or her back and always using a firm sleep surface because, they say, “car seats and other sitting devices are not recommended for routine sleep.”
The models involved in the recall are Nap Nanny Generations One and Two and the Chill model. The CPSC says consumers should review the return policy of the individual retailer from which they purchased a Nap Nanny recliner.
